What Does Google Maps Call Lake Ontario? Canada and U.S. Labels Explained
If you open Google Maps in Canada, it’s Lake Ontario.
If you open it in the United States, Google now shows Lake America.
And if you’re somewhere else in the world, you may see both names.
Google made the change after the U.S. government officially adopted “Lake America” for its federal maps and systems as of 12:00 a.m. EST on Sunday August 30th.
But here’s the important part: the lake didn’t change.
The international border didn’t move. Canada’s sovereignty didn’t change. And in Canada, it remains Lake Ontario.
Not every map company is following Washington’s lead either. MapQuest has said it will continue calling it Lake Ontario.
So if you’re Canadian and wondering what happened to Lake Ontario, the answer is simple:
Nothing. It’s still right where we left it.
