Canada Is Not For Sale: Protest Art Recognized Globally

Our "Canada Is Not For Sale" hat isn't just apparel, it's protest art, and the New York Times agrees. Recognized internationally as a powerful symbol of resistance, our hats have reached over 40,000 people globally, uniting Canadians across the political spectrum.

Ruth Ben-Ghiat, professor of history at New York University, explains our approach in a recent New York Times article: “It takes a ubiquitous symbol that is visually arresting and appropriates it with an entirely different message.” She notes, “Authoritarians in general have been very savvy about apparel and creating clothing with tribal affiliations... Trump is a marketer, so he understands this.”

David Soberman of the Rotman School of Management says clearly: “The point is to absorb the tactics of Trump but change the message.” Psychologists call this the "poison parasite defense"—attaching a new meaning to a familiar "host message."

Political strategist Anat Shenker-Osorio emphasizes the hat's unifying impact: “It really says, ‘I stand for the idea of a sovereign nation.’” She identifies its success as embodying “resistance, refusal and ridicule,” adding, “Ridicule is critical.”

Our hat simplifies complex issues. As Liam Mooney puts it, “Policy and trade pacts and international relations can be very confusing. This cuts through all the noise.”
